AGE OF GODS
When Somerislanders say something happened “back when the gods were about”, they mean it happened in the Age of Gods. This was the age of the first god, Chaos, who begat Terra (Earth). Terra begat Caelus (Sky), and Terra and Caelus mated to produce the twelve titans. One of them was Saturn, who castrated Caelus and threw his genitals into the sea, before taking his place.
Saturn, wary of the same thing happening to him, ate all his offspring from his sister, Ops. But she fed him a rock instead of their youngest child, Jupiter, and Saturn ended up being deposed by Jupiter in a war between the titans and the gods.
This was also the time of Woden, Thunor, and the other Saxon gods, who joined Jupiter in the first Gigantomachia, the war against the titans and giants.
The first men also lived during this age, in a glittering island confederacy of 13 kings called ‘Atlantis’. Some identify Atlantis with Eden from the Age of Heroes (and some even identify it with Somerisle itself). It was the titan Prometheus who first gifted technology to the Atlanteans.
Dwarves, Light Elves, and Dark Elves were created in the Age of Gods, spawned from the blood of giants spilled during the Gigantomachia.
AGE OF HEROES
When Somerislanders say something happened “back when there were real men”, they mean it happened in the Age of Heroes. This was the time of Troy, and later Sparta and Athens. Heroes walked the earth, including Hercules, Achilles, Hector, Ulysses, Jason and his Argonauts, Perseus, Theseus, Alexander the Great, Romulus and Remus, and so on.
The people of Somerisle believe most of the stuff in the Old Testament happened in the Age of Heroes, from the Garden of Eden, to the flood, to Abraham and Isaac, Moses and the Exodus from Egypt, and so on. The flood in the Book of Genesis is believed to have been the same one which wiped out Atlantis.
This was also the time when palaeolithic peoples erected stone circles across Somerisle. Nothing exists of their culture today, apart from scattered pottery fragments and faded cave paintings.
AGE OF ROME
This is when the Romans settled on Somerisle (which they knew as ‘Ultima Thule’), and introduced their religion (and later Christianity) to the island. Ruined villas and fortifications still dot the coast and interior, overgrown by vines and other greenery. This is also when the people of Somerisle believe the events of the New Testament took place.
AGE OF SAXONS
This is a time of fire and murder, when Saxon raiders burned the Roman settlements. It is also the time of Arthur, Merlin, Beowulf, and dragons. Somerislanders today are the direct descendants of those Saxon raiders.
